Cyril Lucaris

Cyril Lucaris, born on November thirteenth, fifteen seventy-two, was a prominent Greek prelate and theologian hailing from Heraklion, Crete, which was then part of the Republic of Venice. His ecclesiastical journey led him to become the Greek Patriarch of Alexandria, known as Cyril III, and later the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, taking the name Cyril I.

Throughout his tenure, Cyril I was noted for his ambitious attempts to reform the Eastern Orthodox Church, drawing inspiration from Calvinist Protestant principles. However, his efforts to integrate Calvinism into the Orthodox tradition faced significant resistance, and the implications of his actions and beliefs continue to spark scholarly debate.

In recognition of his contributions and the controversies surrounding his legacy, Cyril I is venerated as a hieromartyr within the Alexandrian Orthodox Church. His life and work were honored by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, which glorified him on October sixth, two thousand nine. Cyril Lucaris is commemorated annually on June twenty-seventh, reflecting his enduring impact on the Orthodox community.
