Cyrillus Kreek

Cyrillus Kreek, born on December third, eighteen eighty-nine, was a prominent Estonian composer, conductor, and music educator. His musical journey began at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied trombone and composition from nineteen oh eight to nineteen sixteen, just before the tumultuous Russian Revolution.

After completing his studies, Kreek returned to his homeland, where he dedicated himself to teaching music in Haapsalu, Tartu Higher Music College, and later at the Tallinn Conservatory. His passion for music extended beyond the classroom; in nineteen eleven, he began collecting religious folksongs in the Haapsalu region, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to preserving Estonian folk music.

Kreek was a pioneer in the field of folk music collection, being the first Estonian to utilize the phonograph for this purpose. His arrangements of folk melodies have become integral to the repertoire of Estonian choral societies. His psalm settings, characterized by their folk influences, showcase his skill in choral coloring and imitation, elevating them beyond mere arrangements.

Among his notable works, Kreek's magnum opus is his Requiem, which features an Estonian translation of Mozart's Requiem text. Additionally, he gained recognition as an instrumental composer with pieces such as Musica sacra, a Humoreske for orchestra, and a Suite for zithers and orchestra, further solidifying his legacy in the world of music.
