Cyrus Mistry, born on July 4, 1968, was a prominent Irish businessman known for his significant role as the chairman of the Tata Group, one of India's largest business conglomerates. He took the helm of the Tata Group in December 2012, becoming the sixth chairman and notably the second to lead the group without the Tata surname, following Nowroji Saklatwala.
During his tenure, Mistry faced numerous challenges, including a controversial dismissal in October 2016 by the board of Tata Sons, which led to Ratan Tata's return as interim chairman. Despite a brief restoration by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal in December 2019, the Supreme Court ultimately upheld his removal, marking a tumultuous chapter in his leadership.
Mistry held an impressive eighteen point four percent stake in Tata Sons through his company, Cyrus Investments Pvt. Ltd. At the time of his passing, his net worth was estimated to be nearly twenty-nine billion dollars, positioning him among the wealthiest individuals in India. He was also a member of the National Integration Council, contributing to various social initiatives.
Tragically, Cyrus Mistry's life was cut short in a road accident on September 4, 2022, on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai highway. Investigations pointed to poor road design and the lack of seat belt usage as contributing factors to the fatal crash.
