Dan Barrow

Daniel Hubert Barrow, Jr., born on July 22, 1909, was a distinguished American rower who left an indelible mark on the sport. As the eldest of twelve children in the Barrow family, he grew up in a vibrant household in West Philadelphia. His athletic journey began at West Philadelphia Catholic High School, where he caught the attention of Jack Kelly Sr., a three-time Olympic gold medalist and father of actress Grace Kelly. This pivotal moment led to Barrow's recruitment into the Pennsylvania Athletic Club's renowned 'Big Eight' crew.

Between 1928 and 1932, Barrow and his teammates, including notable rowers like Chester Turner and Joe Dougherty, achieved an impressive record, remaining undefeated in thirty-one races. Their crowning achievement came in 1930 when they triumphed at the FISA World Rowing Championship in Liège, Belgium, winning by two boat lengths and setting a world record for the two-thousand-meter distance in an earlier heat.

Barrow's Olympic journey culminated in 1936 when he competed in the single sculls event at the Summer Olympics. Despite facing challenges, including rowing a heavier boat compared to his European counterparts, he showcased remarkable resilience. Initially in second place, Barrow was bumped by another competitor, causing him to fall back to fourth. However, he regained his momentum and secured a bronze medal, a testament to his determination and skill.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport and his high school, Barrow was inducted into the West Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame, celebrating his legacy as a remarkable athlete and a source of inspiration for future generations.
