His political career began on the Cumberland town council, where he served from 1992 to 1998, before taking on the role of mayor of Cumberland in two separate terms, first from 2000 to 2004 and then from 2006 until 2014.

In 2014, McKee was elected as lieutenant governor and successfully secured reelection in 2018. His ascent to the governorship came in 2021 when he succeeded Governor Gina Raimondo, who resigned after being confirmed as the United States Secretary of Commerce. McKee was later elected to a full term in 2022, further solidifying his influence in Rhode Island politics.
