He is best recognized as the lead guitarist for the iconic thrash metal band Anthrax, a role he held from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen ninety-five and again from two thousand five to two thousand seven. His contributions to the band have left an indelible mark on the heavy metal genre.

In addition to his musical career, Spitz is the founder of the Christian music group Red Lamb, which gained attention for its poignant lyrics focused on autism awareness.
