Daniel Auber

Daniel Auber, born on January twenty-ninth, seventeen eighty-two, was a prominent French composer, choreographer, pedagogue, and musicologist. He emerged from an artistic family and initially dabbled in composition as an amateur. However, following a downturn in his family's fortunes in eighteen twenty, Auber transitioned to writing operas professionally, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

His most significant collaboration was with the librettist Eugène Scribe, a partnership that spanned an impressive forty-one years and yielded thirty-nine operas, many of which achieved both commercial and critical acclaim. Auber is particularly renowned for his contributions to the opéra-comique genre, having composed thirty-five works in this style. Notably, he co-created the first French grand opera, La Muette de Portici, in eighteen twenty-eight, a groundbreaking piece that influenced the large-scale operatic works of Giacomo Meyerbeer.

Auber's influence extended beyond composition; he held two prestigious musical positions throughout his career. From eighteen forty-two to eighteen seventy-one, he served as the director of the Paris Conservatoire, where he implemented significant expansions and modernization efforts. Additionally, from eighteen fifty-two until the fall of the Second Empire in eighteen seventy, he directed the imperial chapel in the Louvre, producing a substantial body of liturgical and religious music.

Auber's dedication to Paris was unwavering, as he chose to remain in the city during the tumultuous times of the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent Paris Commune. He passed away in his home in Paris at the age of eighty-nine, just before the French government regained control of the capital.
