Daniel Auber

Daniel Auber, born on January twenty-ninth, seventeen eighty-two, was a prominent French composer, choreographer, pedagogue, and musicologist. He emerged from an artistic family and initially dabbled in composition as an amateur. However, the family's financial decline in eighteen twenty prompted him to pursue a professional career in opera, leading to a remarkable transformation in his life.

Auber's collaboration with librettist Eugène Scribe became one of the most fruitful partnerships in the history of French opera, spanning an impressive forty-one years. Together, they created thirty-nine operas, many of which garnered both commercial success and critical acclaim. Auber is particularly renowned for his contributions to the opéra-comique genre, having composed thirty-five works that exemplify this style. Notably, he co-wrote the first French grand opera, La Muette de Portici, in eighteen twenty-eight, a groundbreaking piece that influenced the future of large-scale operatic works.

In addition to his compositional achievements, Auber held significant positions in the musical landscape of France. From eighteen forty-two to eighteen seventy-one, he served as the director of the Paris Conservatoire, where he played a pivotal role in expanding and modernizing the institution. Furthermore, from eighteen fifty-two until the fall of the Second Empire in eighteen seventy, he directed the imperial chapel in the Louvre, contributing a substantial body of liturgical and religious music.

Auber's dedication to Paris was unwavering, even during the tumultuous times of the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent Paris Commune. He chose to remain in the city he loved, ultimately passing away in his home at the age of eighty-nine, just before the French government regained control of the capital.
