Daniel Komen

Daniel Komen, born on May 17, 1976, is a distinguished Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner, celebrated for his remarkable achievements in athletics. His career is particularly noted for a fierce rivalry with the legendary Haile Gebrselassie, which captivated fans during the late 1990s.

Between 1996 and 1998, Komen emerged as a dominant force in the world of distance running, shattering multiple world records. He set the world record for the 3000 metres in 1996 with an astonishing time of 7:20.67, a record that stood for nearly twenty-eight years. Additionally, he established the world best in the two-mile run in 1997, clocking in at 7:58.61, making him one of only two men in history to maintain an average pace of under four minutes per mile over that distance.

Komen's prowess extended beyond these distances; he is also recognized as the Kenyan record holder for the 5000 metres, both outdoors and indoors. His remarkable ability to break significant time barriers is exemplified by his status as the second man, following Saïd Aouita, to surpass the three-and-a-half-minute mark for the 1500 metres, the seven-and-a-half-minute mark for the 3000 metres, and the thirteen-minute mark for the 5000 metres.
