Daniel Manning

Daniel Manning, born on May sixteenth, eighteen thirty-one, was a prominent American journalist, banker, and politician. Hailing from Albany, New York, he embarked on his newspaper career at the tender age of eleven, eventually rising through the ranks of the Albany Argus to become its president and publisher. Despite lacking formal education, Manning's dedication to self-study allowed him to gain expertise in diverse fields, including finance and fine art.

As a committed Democrat, Manning played a significant role in the political landscape of his time. He attended numerous state and national conventions as a delegate and served as chair of the New York Democratic Party. His unwavering support for Grover Cleveland culminated in Cleveland's successful presidential campaign in eighteen eighty-four, leading to Manning's appointment as the thirty-seventh United States Secretary of the Treasury, a position he held from eighteen eighty-five to eighteen eighty-seven.

In his capacity as Secretary of the Treasury, Manning was a trusted advisor to President Cleveland, providing crucial insights on fiscal and economic policies, as well as political appointments. His tenure was marked by a commitment to sound financial management, although he ultimately left the cabinet due to health issues. Following his departure, he briefly served as president of the Western National Bank of New York.
