As a co-founder of the Quebec technical death metal band Martyr, he has made a significant impact as a composer, vocalist, and guitarist. Since two thousand eight, he has also been the guitarist for the iconic Canadian thrash/progressive metal band Voivod, stepping into the role after the passing of the legendary Denis D'Amour.

Mongrain's musical journey began in the late nineties when he joined Gorguts in nineteen ninety-nine, shortly after the release of their acclaimed album Obscura. Academically, Mongrain holds a bachelor's degree in Jazz Interpretation from the University of Montreal. He shares his passion for music by teaching jazz and pop guitar, along with theory courses at the Cégep régional de Lanaudière, Joliette Campus.
