Daniel Pennac, born on December first, nineteen forty-four, is a distinguished French writer known for his versatility as a screenwriter, novelist, audiobook narrator, children's author, and essayist. He garnered significant acclaim in two thousand seven when he received the prestigious Prix Renaudot for his insightful essay, Chagrin d'école.

Born Daniel Pennacchioni, he is the youngest of four sons in a family with Corsican and Provençal roots. His father, a polytechnicien who rose to the rank of general in the colonial army, and his mother, a self-taught reader and housewife, instilled in him a profound love for literature. His childhood was marked by frequent relocations due to his father's military career, spanning various countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, and France, where he developed a voracious appetite for reading.

After completing his studies in Nice, Pennac embarked on a teaching career, which eventually led him to write for children. His notable series, 'La Saga Malaussène,' follows the life of Benjamin Malaussène, a scapegoat navigating the complexities of family life in Belleville, Paris. In a thought-provoking piece for Le Monde in nineteen ninety-seven, he revealed that Malaussène's youngest brother, Le Petit, is inspired by Jerome Charyn's New York detective, Isaac Sidel.
