Primarily recognized as a solo artist, he has also made significant contributions as a member of the band Attack in Black and has collaborated with notable artists such as Julie Doiron, Tamara Lindeman, and Frederick Squire. Romano's creative prowess extends beyond music; he has produced and performed with the acclaimed project City and Colour, led by Dallas Green.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Romano is a co-founder of the independent record label You've Changed Records, alongside Steve Lambke of the Constantines. His artistic talents are not limited to music; he has designed album artwork for various artists, including M. Ward, Ben Kweller, Ladyhawk, and City and Colour, showcasing his versatility as a visual artist.

Romano's musical style is diverse, with the Canadian music magazine Exclaim! identifying five distinct genres in his work.
