Daniel Romano

Daniel Romano, born on January 1, 1985, is a multifaceted Canadian musician, poet, and visual artist hailing from Welland, Ontario. Primarily recognized as a solo artist, he has also made significant contributions as a member of the band Attack in Black and has collaborated with notable artists such as Julie Doiron, Tamara Lindeman, and Frederick Squire. Romano's creative prowess extends beyond music; he has produced and performed with the acclaimed project City and Colour, led by Dallas Green.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Romano is a co-founder of the independent record label You've Changed Records, alongside Steve Lambke of the Constantines. His artistic talents are not limited to music; he has designed album artwork for various artists, including M. Ward, Ben Kweller, Ladyhawk, and City and Colour, showcasing his versatility as a visual artist.

Romano's musical style is diverse, with the Canadian music magazine Exclaim! identifying five distinct genres in his work. These include a gentle, rustic folk sound evident in projects like Daniel, Fred & Julie, a retro country style in albums such as Sleep Beneath the Willow, and straight-ahead rock in Nerveless. His psychedelic rock influences are apparent in Modern Pressure, while his punk rock roots shine through in his work with Ancient Shapes.

Throughout his career, Romano has received critical acclaim, with his album Sleep Beneath the Willow being longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2011, and Come Cry With Me achieving the same recognition in 2013. His 2016 album If I've Only One Time Askin' earned a nomination for a Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. In 2018, he surprised fans with the simultaneous release of two albums, Human Touch and Nerveless.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Romano continued to create, releasing several albums, including the surprise album Visions of the Higher Dream and the live album Okay Wow. He also collaborated with his brother Ian and members of Fucked Up on the EP Super Pollen. In 2021, he released the live album Fully Plugged In and announced the upcoming album Cobra Poems. Romano has also made guest appearances, including playing guitar for the Sadies' concert tour and joining the new band Pig Pen in 2025.
