Danny Higginbotham

Danny Higginbotham, born on December 29, 1978, is a former professional footballer who carved out a notable career as a defender. Originating from England, he proudly represented Gibraltar in international football, showcasing his unique heritage.

Higginbotham's journey began in the prestigious Manchester United academy, where he honed his skills before making his senior debut. Seeking more playing time, he was loaned to Belgian club Royal Antwerp. Upon returning, he joined Derby County in 2000, where he spent three years before transferring to Southampton for a fee of one and a half million pounds in February 2003. His tenure at Southampton included a memorable run to the 2003 FA Cup Final.

After Southampton's relegation in 2005, Higginbotham sought new opportunities, leading him to Stoke City for a fee of two hundred twenty-five thousand pounds in August 2006. He quickly became a key player, even taking on the captaincy in January 2007. Despite a strong season, he again requested a transfer, which led to a brief stint at Sunderland before returning to Stoke in 2008. His contributions were vital as Stoke established themselves in the Premier League, including scoring a crucial goal in the FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham United.

Higginbotham's career continued with loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town, before joining Sheffield United on a free transfer in January 2013. After eight months, he moved to Conference Premier side Chester and concluded his playing days with a short spell at Altrincham.

Internationally, Higginbotham made his debut for Gibraltar in November 2013 at the age of thirty-four, qualifying through his maternal grandmother. He retired from club football in January 2014 but continued to represent Gibraltar until his international retirement in March.
