He hails from Warburg, Alberta, where he began his journey in the sport. Hakstol played for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-two, showcasing his skills on the ice before transitioning into coaching.

His coaching career began with the Sioux City Musketeers, where he served as head coach for four seasons. Following this, he returned to his alma mater, the University of North Dakota, as an assistant coach for four years. In two thousand four, he was promoted to head coach, a position he held for eleven successful seasons, further solidifying his reputation in collegiate hockey.

In two thousand fifteen, Hakstol took the helm of the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League (NHL), leading the team until his departure in two thousand eighteen. He then became the inaugural head coach of the NHL's Seattle Kraken, guiding the franchise from its expansion in two thousand twenty-one until two thousand twenty-four.

In addition to his coaching roles at the club level, Hakstol has also contributed to international hockey as an assistant coach for Canada's national men's team in two thousand seventeen and two thousand nineteen. Currently, he serves as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, continuing to make his mark in the world of ice hockey.
