David A. Johnston

David A. Johnston, born on December eighteenth, nineteen forty-nine, was a dedicated American volcanologist and geologist who made significant contributions to the field of volcanology. As a principal scientist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), he was deeply involved in monitoring volcanic activity across the United States, including notable sites such as the Augustine Volcano in Alaska and the San Juan volcanic field in Colorado.

Tragically, Johnston's life was cut short during the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens on May eighteenth, nineteen eighty. Positioned six miles away at an observation post, he became the first to report the eruption, famously transmitting the urgent message, 'Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!' before being swept away by a lateral blast. Despite extensive search efforts, his body was never recovered, although remnants of his USGS trailer were discovered in nineteen ninety-three.
