David Dinkins

David Dinkins, born on July 10, 1927, was a prominent American politician, lawyer, and author who made history as the 107th mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1993. His tenure marked a significant milestone as he became the first African American to hold this esteemed office.

Before his political career, Dinkins served in the U.S. Marine Corps as one of the Montford Point Marines, the first African American Marines, from 1945 to 1946. He graduated cum laude from Howard University and earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors in public service.

Dinkins began his political journey in 1966 when he was elected to the New York State Assembly. His dedication and leadership eventually led him to serve as the Manhattan borough president. In 1989, he won the New York City mayoral election, a testament to his commitment to the community and his vision for the city.

After his term as mayor, which ended in 1993, Dinkins continued to influence municipal politics and joined the faculty at Columbia University, where he shared his wealth of knowledge and experience with future generations.
