David Karp, born on July 6, 1986, is an influential American entrepreneur and programmer, renowned for founding the microblogging platform Tumblr. His journey into the tech world began at a young age when he interned at Frederator Studios, where he not only built the studio's first blogging platform but also played a pivotal role in launching their internet video network, Channel Frederator.
After his stint at Frederator, Karp worked for UrbanBaby, an online parenting forum, until its acquisition by CNET in 2006. He then established his own software consulting firm, Davidville, collaborating with software engineer Marco Arment on various projects. During a brief hiatus in 2006, Karp and Arment conceptualized a microblogging site that would eventually become Tumblr, officially launched in February 2007.
Under Karp's leadership, Tumblr flourished, hosting over three hundred seventy-five million blogs by November 2017. His innovative contributions to technology earned him accolades, including the title of Best Young Tech Entrepreneur in 2009 by BusinessWeek and a spot on the MIT Technology Review's TR35 list in 2010, recognizing him as one of the top thirty-five innovators under thirty-five.
In May 2013, Karp's vision for Tumblr attracted the attention of Yahoo!, leading to a significant acquisition deal valued at one point one billion dollars. Karp continued to serve as CEO until he announced his departure from Tumblr in November 2017, marking the end of an era for the platform he built.
