David Laird

David Laird, born on March twelfth, eighteen thirty-three in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, emerged from a Presbyterian family renowned for its civic engagement. His father, Alexander, was a dedicated Reformer and Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly, which undoubtedly influenced David's own political aspirations. Laird became a Liberal MLA for Belfast and took a significant step in his career by establishing and editing The Patriot, a publication that would serve as a platform for his political views.

Initially, Laird was opposed to the idea of Confederation; however, he played a pivotal role in the negotiations that ultimately led to Prince Edward Island joining Canada as a province. His political journey continued as he became a Liberal member of the Canadian parliament under the leadership of Alexander Mackenzie. During his tenure, he served as the minister of the interior, where he was instrumental in the passage of the Indian Act into Canadian law.

In addition to his parliamentary duties, Laird made history as the first resident lieutenant governor of the North-West Territories, becoming the fifth individual to hold this important position. His tenure was marked by negotiations of several treaties with Aboriginal peoples. While Laird's approach reflected the paternalistic attitudes of his era, his colleagues recognized him for his unwavering dedication, reliability, and integrity in his role as a federal official.
