David López-Zubero Purcell, born on February 11, 1959, in Syracuse, New York, is a distinguished former competitive swimmer who proudly represented Spain in three Summer Olympics. With dual Spanish-American citizenship, Zubero made his mark in the swimming world, clinching an Olympic bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

His early swimming journey began at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, where he excelled on the high school swim team, graduating in 1977. Zubero continued to hone his skills at the University of Florida in Gainesville, competing for the Florida Gators swimming and diving team from 1977 to 1981. During his collegiate career, he consistently reached the championship finals of the 200-yard individual medley and was part of the Gators' 800-yard freestyle relay team that set an American record and tied the NCAA record in 1979.
