David of Trebizond, born in the year fourteen hundred and eight, was the last Emperor of Trebizond, reigning briefly from fourteen sixty to fourteen sixty-one. He was the third son of Emperor Alexios IV and Theodora Kantakouzene, a lineage that carried the weight of a once-thriving empire.
His reign came to an abrupt end with the fall of Trebizond to the Ottoman Empire. Following this significant loss, David and his family were captured and taken to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman realm. Tragically, in fourteen sixty-three, he and his sons, along with his nephew, faced execution, marking a somber end to their legacy.
In a posthumous recognition of their sacrifice, David and his family were canonized by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in July two thousand and thirteen. Their feast day is commemorated on the first of November, coinciding with the anniversary of their deaths, ensuring that their memory endures in the annals of history.
