David Alfred Perdue Jr., born on December 10, 1949, is a prominent American diplomat, businessman, and politician. He currently serves as the 14th United States ambassador to China, a position he has held since 2025. A member of the Republican Party, Perdue previously represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2021, where he made significant contributions to various legislative initiatives.
Before entering politics, Perdue built a successful career in business. After twelve years as a management consultant, he took on the role of senior vice president at Reebok, eventually rising to the position of CEO. His career also included a stint at PillowTex, a North Carolina textile company, which unfortunately went bankrupt shortly after his departure in two thousand three. He later became the CEO of Dollar General, further solidifying his reputation in the business world.
Perdue's political journey began with his successful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2014, where he defeated Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former U.S. senator Sam Nunn. He sought reelection in 2020 but lost to Democrat Jon Ossoff in a runoff election held on January 5, 2021. Following the controversial November 2020 presidential election, Perdue called for the resignation of Georgia's top elections official, citing unspecified failures in the electoral process.
In 2022, Perdue challenged incumbent Governor Brian Kemp in the Republican primary for the Georgia gubernatorial election but was unsuccessful. However, his political career took a new turn when, on December 5, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated him as the United States ambassador to China. The U.S. Senate confirmed his appointment on April 29, 2025, with a vote of sixty-seven to twenty-nine, and he presented his credentials on May 16, 2025.
