David Petraeus, born on November 7, 1952, is a distinguished retired United States Army general and former director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His military career spanned thirty-seven years, culminating in his leadership roles as commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. Forces – Afghanistan (USFOR-A) from July 2010 to July 2011. Petraeus's strategic acumen was further demonstrated during his tenure as the 10th commander of U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and as the commanding general of the Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) from February 2007 to September 2008, where he oversaw all coalition forces in Iraq.
Petraeus's academic achievements are notable; he was awarded the General George C. Marshall Award as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1983. He later served as an assistant professor of international relations at the United States Military Academy and completed a fellowship at Georgetown University. Since 2022, he has been imparting his knowledge as a Kissinger Senior Fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.
In June 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Petraeus to succeed General Stanley McChrystal as the commanding general of ISAF, a role that marked a significant transition in his career. He was confirmed as the director of the CIA on June 30, 2011, with a unanimous Senate vote. However, his tenure was marred by controversy; he resigned on November 9, 2012, following revelations of an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, which came to light during an FBI investigation.
In January 2015, it was reported that the FBI and the Department of Justice had recommended felony charges against Petraeus for providing classified information to Broadwell. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information, resulting in a sentence of two years of probation and a fine of one hundred thousand dollars for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.
