His journey in football began in the youth system of Huddersfield Town before he transitioned to York City in two thousand, where he became a trainee in two thousand two.

Stockdale made his first-team debut on the final day of the two thousand two to three season and quickly established himself as a key player during the two thousand four to five season. After loan spells at Wakefield-Emley and Worksop Town, he was released by York City in two thousand six. He then joined Darlington, where he played a pivotal role in the club's playoff campaign during his second season.

In two thousand eight, Stockdale signed with Premier League club Fulham for an undisclosed fee, although he struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup, leading to several loan moves to Football League clubs. His career took a significant turn when he joined Brighton & Hove Albion in two thousand fourteen, contributing to their promotion to the Premier League in his third season.

After declining a new contract with Brighton, he signed with Birmingham City in two thousand seventeen. The following season, he had brief loan spells at Southend United, Wycombe Wanderers, and Coventry City. Despite being called up to the England squad, he remains uncapped.
