Dawud al-Zahiri

Dawud al-Zahiri was a prominent Persian Sunnī Muslim scholar, jurist, and theologian who flourished during the Islamic Golden Age. Renowned for his expertise in Islamic law (sharīʿa), he made significant contributions to the fields of hermeneutics, biographical evaluation, and the historiography of early Islam.

As the eponymous founder of the Ẓāhirī school of thought, Dawud established the fifth school of thought in Sunnī Islam. His approach was characterized by a strict adherence to literalism, emphasizing the outward (ẓāhir) meanings of expressions found in the Quran and ḥadīth literature. He advocated for the consensus (ijmāʿ) of Muhammad's closest companions (ṣaḥāba) as a primary source of Islamic law, while firmly rejecting analogical deduction (qiyās) and societal customs (urf) that were utilized by other schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

Throughout his lifetime, Dawud al-Zahiri was a celebrated figure, often referred to in Islamic historiographical texts as 'the scholar of the era.' His teachings and methodologies sparked both admiration and controversy, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in the development of Islamic thought.
