Dayan Khan, born in 1472, emerged as a pivotal figure in Mongolian history, serving as the khagan of the Northern Yuan dynasty from 1480 to 1517. His reign marked a significant era of unity among the Mongols, as he successfully reinstated Chinggisid supremacy over the fragmented tribes.
Under his leadership, Dayan Khan undertook decisive military campaigns, notably eliminating the Oirat and the great Khan of Chagatai, Altnaa. He also abolished the taishi system that had empowered local and foreign warlords, thereby consolidating his authority and establishing a more centralized governance.
One of his most notable achievements was the victory at Dalan Tergin, which not only reunified the Mongols but also reinforced their identity as Chinggisid people. His strategic decision to divide the six tumens of Eastern Mongolia into fiefs for his sons laid the groundwork for a decentralized yet stable Borjigin rule that would endure for a century across the Mongolian Plateau.
