De La Soul

De La Soul, an iconic American hip-hop group, emerged from the village of Amityville on Long Island, New York, in 1988. The trio, consisting of Kelvin "Posdnuos" Mercer, David "Trugoy the Dove" Jolicoeur, and Vincent "Maseo" Mason, formed during their high school years and quickly gained recognition for their unique sound. Their eclectic sampling and eccentric lyrics played a pivotal role in shaping the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres.

Their debut album, "3 Feet High and Rising," released in 1989, is often hailed as a hip-hop masterpiece and remains their most commercially successful work. Despite this, De La Soul continued to produce acclaimed albums throughout their career, solidifying their status as pioneers in the music industry. As the first and longest-standing group within the Native Tongues collective, they have influenced countless artists and genres.

In 2006, De La Soul received a Grammy Award for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the hit single "Feel Good Inc." Over the years, they have released a total of 10 studio albums and one live album, showcasing their evolution as artists. However, their extensive catalog was not available on audio streaming services until 2023, due to contractual disputes and copyright issues surrounding their innovative sampling techniques.

Tragically, the group faced a significant loss in 2023 with the passing of Trugoy the Dove. Despite this, De La Soul's legacy continues to resonate, and their contributions to hip-hop remain influential and celebrated.
