Dean E. Chynoweth, born on October 30, 1968, is a distinguished Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He made his mark in the National Hockey League, playing for the New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins. Drafted thirteenth overall by the Islanders in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Chynoweth showcased his skills over ten NHL seasons, participating in two hundred forty-one regular-season games, where he scored four goals and eighteen assists, totaling twenty-two points while accumulating six hundred sixty-seven penalty minutes.
Beyond his playing career, Chynoweth transitioned into coaching, taking the helm as head coach of the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. His leadership extended to the Swift Current Broncos, where he served as both general manager and head coach from two thousand four to two thousand eleven. Additionally, he contributed to the New York Islanders as an assistant coach, further solidifying his presence in the hockey community.
Chynoweth's legacy is intertwined with that of his father, Ed Chynoweth, a respected figure in hockey who was the longtime president of the WHL and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee. Ed's passing on April twenty-second, two thousand eight, left a significant impact on the hockey world.
In June two thousand twelve, Chynoweth was appointed head coach of the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters. His coaching journey continued as he joined the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes as an assistant coach in July two thousand eighteen, followed by a similar role with the Toronto Maple Leafs in July two thousand twenty-one. Most recently, on June seventeenth, two thousand twenty-four, he was hired as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, marking another chapter in his extensive career.
