Dean Phillips

Dean Phillips, born on January 20, 1969, is an accomplished American politician and businessman who made significant strides in the political landscape as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 3rd congressional district from 2019 to 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, Phillips transitioned from a successful career in the food and beverage industry to public service, where he has made a notable impact.

Before entering politics, Phillips held the position of president and CEO of his family's distilled spirits business, Phillips Distilling Company. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to co-own several well-known brands, including Talenti Gelato, Belvedere Vodka, and the popular Twin Cities coffeehouse chain, Penny's.

Phillips first entered the political arena in 2018, achieving a remarkable victory over six-term Republican incumbent Erik Paulsen, thus becoming the first Democrat to secure the seat in sixty years. He was subsequently reelected twice, demonstrating his strong support within the community. In November 2023, he announced his decision not to seek another term, marking the end of a significant chapter in his political career.

Recognized as a moderate Democrat, Phillips briefly co-chaired the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. Despite his alignment with President Joe Biden's policies, he made headlines by challenging Biden for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2024 presidential election. His campaign, which focused on the need for younger leadership, garnered him four delegates to the Democratic National Convention, positioning him as the runner-up in the primaries.
