Death of Carlo Giuliani

Carlo Giuliani, born on March 14, 1978, was a passionate Italian political activist known for his involvement in the anti-globalization movement. His life was tragically cut short at the age of twenty-three during the tumultuous G8 summit protests in Genoa, Italy, in July 2001. Giuliani became a symbol of the movement when he was shot while attacking a Carabinieri van with a fire extinguisher, an act that would lead to his untimely death.

The incident unfolded as Giuliani, a Roman residing in Genoa, was photographed throwing the fire extinguisher at the van. In response, an officer inside the vehicle fired a shot, which ricocheted and struck Giuliani. The van subsequently ran over his body, marking a pivotal moment in the history of anti-globalization demonstrations, as it was the first death recorded since the movement gained momentum during the 1999 Seattle WTO protests.

Initially, charges against the officer were dismissed, with a judge ruling the shooting as self-defense. However, the case drew significant public attention and scrutiny. Eight years later, the European Court of Human Rights determined that the Italian forces acted within their limits but awarded damages for the procedural handling of the case. Giuliani's family pursued a civil suit following the court's ruling.
