Debbie Brill

Debbie Brill, born on March 10, 1953, is a trailblazing Canadian high jumper who made history at the tender age of sixteen by becoming the first North American woman to clear six feet. Her innovative reverse jumping style, known as the Brill Bend, was developed during her childhood, paralleling the emergence of the Fosbury Flop in the United States.

Brill's athletic prowess shone brightly on the international stage, where she clinched gold medals at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and the 1971 Pan American Games. Her journey continued as she represented Canada at the 1972 Summer Olympics, finishing eighth amidst a challenging competition. However, the tragic events of the Munich massacre led her to step away from the sport for a brief period.

After a three-year hiatus, Brill returned to high jumping with renewed vigor, achieving remarkable success. She secured gold at the IAAF World Cup in 1979 and again at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Notably, she has held the Canadian high jump record since 1969, setting an impressive mark of one point ninety-nine metres in 1982, just months after welcoming her first child.
