Debbie Van Kiekebelt

Debbie Van Kiekebelt, born on March first, nineteen fifty-four, is a distinguished Canadian athlete and pioneering sports broadcaster. She made her mark in the world of athletics as a combined track and field event athlete, excelling in high jump, long jump, and pentathlon. Her remarkable talent was showcased at the 1971 Pan American Games, where she clinched a gold medal in the pentathlon and earned the title of Canadian Woman Athlete of the Year.

Van Kiekebelt's athletic journey began at Clarkson Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, where she not only dominated the Peel regional titles but also set numerous records across various events. Her competitive spirit was evident when she finished second to fellow Canadian Debbie Brill in the high jump at the British 1971 WAAA Championships.

In addition to her Pan-Am success, she represented Canada at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, competing in the long jump and pentathlon. Although she did not advance to the finals in the long jump and placed fifteenth in the pentathlon, her dedication to the sport remained unwavering. She later secured a silver medal in the high jump at the 1973 Pacific Conference Games and was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame in nineteen seventy-seven.

Transitioning from athlete to broadcaster, Van Kiekebelt became Canada's first female sports broadcaster, making her debut on Citytv and NBC. She hosted six television series, paving the way for future generations of female sports journalists. Her commitment to supporting Canadian athletes continued as she served as a director for the See You In Athens Fund, which aided athletes attending the two thousand four Summer Olympics.
