Deborah Kerr

Deborah Jane Trimmer, known professionally as Deborah Kerr, was born on 30 September 1921 in Scotland. She began her career as a ballerina before transitioning to the stage, where she showcased her talent in various Shakespearean productions and small plays. Her film debut came in 1941 with Major Barbara, which paved the way for leading roles in notable films such as Love on the Dole and Hatter's Castle.

Kerr's breakthrough came with her performance in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp in 1943, a film that is often celebrated as one of the greatest British films. After a successful stint in British cinema, she made her way to Hollywood, where she initially faced challenges with her debut features. However, her role in Edward, My Son in 1949 earned her the distinction of being the first Scottish actress nominated for an Academy Award.

Throughout the 1950s, Kerr solidified her status as a leading actress, receiving three consecutive Academy Award nominations for her performances in The King and I, Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, and Separate Tables. She also starred in the beloved romantic classic An Affair to Remember. Despite a decline in her career during the 1960s, she continued to deliver memorable performances in films like The Sundowners and The Night of the Iguana.
