Delphine LaLaurie

Marie Delphine Macarty, born on March 19, 1787, emerged as a prominent figure in New Orleans society, known for her charm and social standing. However, beneath this facade lay a dark and sinister reality. After marrying three times and experiencing the loss of two husbands, LaLaurie became infamous for her heinous acts against enslaved individuals within her household.

The turning point in her life came on April 10, 1834, when a fire broke out at her opulent mansion on Royal Street. Responders to the blaze stumbled upon a horrifying scene in her attic, where they found enslaved people bound and bearing the marks of prolonged and brutal abuse. This shocking discovery ignited public outrage, leading to a mob that ransacked her home, seeking justice for the atrocities committed.

Following the chaos, LaLaurie fled to France with her family, evading any form of accountability for her actions. Despite her escape, the legacy of her cruelty remains etched in the history of New Orleans. The mansion, often referred to as the LaLaurie Mansion, stands as a testament to her dark past, although it was rebuilt after the mob's destruction.
