Denis Law

Denis Law, born on February 24, 1940, is a celebrated Scottish footballer renowned for his prowess as a forward. His professional journey commenced at Huddersfield Town in 1956, where he played in the Second Division for four years before making a significant move to Manchester City. The transfer, valued at fifty-five thousand pounds, set a new British record at the time.

After a year with Manchester City, Law transferred to Torino for a staggering one hundred ten thousand pounds, marking another record for a British player. Despite his impressive performances in Italy, he struggled to adapt and soon returned to England, signing with Manchester United in 1962 for a then-record fee of one hundred fifteen thousand pounds.

During his eleven-year tenure at Manchester United, Law became a club legend, netting two hundred thirty-seven goals in four hundred four appearances. His remarkable goal tally ranks him third in the club's history, behind only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton. Fans affectionately dubbed him 'The King' and 'The Lawman,' while rival supporters referred to him as 'Denis the Menace.' He was a key figure in the iconic 'United Trinity' alongside Charlton and George Best.

Law's illustrious career includes winning the Ballon d'Or in 1964, making him the only Scottish player to achieve this honor. He played a pivotal role in Manchester United's triumphs, contributing to their First Division victories in 1965 and 1967, the FA Cup win in 1963, and two Charity Shields. Unfortunately, he missed the European Cup final victory in 1968 due to injury.

In 1973, Law returned to Manchester City for a season before representing Scotland at the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He played a total of fifty-five times for his national team, sharing the record for the most goals scored by a Scottish international with thirty. Law also holds a Manchester United record for scoring forty-six competitive goals in a single season, solidifying his legacy as one of football's greats.
