Dennis Fentie

Dennis G. Fentie, born on November 8, 1950, was a prominent Canadian politician and businessperson who made significant contributions to the Yukon Territory. He served as the seventh premier of Yukon and led the Yukon Party from 2002 to 2011, representing the riding of Watson Lake as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

Before embarking on his political career, Fentie was deeply involved in various industries, including logging, tourism, mining, trucking, and fuel distribution in and around Watson Lake. His leadership roles included serving as director of both the Association of Yukon Forests and the Watson Lake Chamber of Commerce, showcasing his commitment to community and economic development.

Fentie's political journey began with his election as a New Democratic Party (NDP) MLA in 1996 and again in 2000. He later joined the Yukon Party, where he was elected as its leader. In the 2002 election, he successfully led the Yukon Party to a majority government, winning twelve out of eighteen seats in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. He was re-elected for a fourth term in Watson Lake, further solidifying the party's position with another majority.

Among his notable achievements, Fentie was instrumental in establishing hospitals in Watson Lake and Dawson City, updating the Robert Campbell Highway, and boosting local industry. He was also a vocal advocate for the northern territories, opposing the Health Accord proposed by Ottawa in 2003, which he believed overlooked the unique challenges of delivering services in the north. His efforts contributed to a new funding deal that secured greater financial support for the territories.

Fentie's commitment to community engagement was evident through his annual tours, where he and other officials visited every community to address residents' concerns directly. On April 27, 2011, he announced his resignation and decision not to seek re-election, marking the end of a significant chapter in Yukon's political history.
