Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Dennis Hastert

Dennis Hastert, born on January 2, 1942, is a notable figure in American politics, having served as the 51st Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party, he represented Illinois's 14th congressional district for two decades, from 1987 until his retirement in 2007. Hastert is recognized as the sixth longest-serving speaker in history and the longest-serving Republican in that role.

Before his political career, Hastert was a dedicated high school teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in Illinois from 1965 to 1981. His initial foray into politics began with a failed bid for the Illinois House of Representatives in 1980, but he successfully secured a seat in 1981. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986 and maintained his position through successive re-elections.

During his tenure as Speaker, Hastert was a staunch supporter of the George W. Bush administration's policies, both foreign and domestic. However, after the Democrats gained control of the House in 2007, he chose not to pursue the minority leader position and transitioned into a lobbying role at Dickstein Shapiro.

In 2015, Hastert faced serious legal troubles when he was indicted on federal charges related to financial misconduct, specifically structuring bank withdrawals to evade reporting requirements. These funds were alleged to have been used as hush money to cover up past sexual misconduct. In a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of structuring, while the charge of making false statements was dropped. In 2016, he was sentenced to fifteen months in prison, making him the highest-ranking elected official in U.S. history to serve a prison sentence.
