Denton Cooley

Denton Cooley, born on August 22, 1920, was a pioneering American cardiothoracic surgeon renowned for his groundbreaking work in cardiac surgery. He made history by performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart, a monumental achievement that significantly advanced the field of cardiology.

As the founder and surgeon in-chief of The Texas Heart Institute, Cooley dedicated his career to improving heart health and surgical techniques. His leadership extended to his role as chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, where he influenced countless medical professionals and patients alike.

In addition to his surgical practice, Cooley served as a consultant in Cardiovascular Surgery at Texas Children's Hospital, showcasing his commitment to pediatric care. He also held the position of clinical professor of Surgery at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he educated the next generation of surgeons.
