Denton Massey

Denton Massey, born on June twentieth, nineteen hundred in Toronto, Ontario, was a multifaceted individual who made significant contributions as an engineer, politician, and Anglican priest. He was the son of Walter Edward Massey and Susan Marie Denton Massey, and the grandson of Hart Massey, the founder of the renowned Massey agricultural manufacturing company. His educational journey began at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario, followed by the University of Toronto, where he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. He later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a degree in engineering in nineteen twenty-two.

In nineteen twenty-seven, Massey founded the York Bible Class, which quickly gained popularity among young people and began broadcasting on the emerging Toronto radio station CFRB. His religious programs resonated with audiences and were aired on various Toronto radio stations both before and after World War II, showcasing his commitment to community engagement through faith.

Massey’s political career began when he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for the Toronto riding of Greenwood from nineteen thirty-five to nineteen forty-nine. He made an attempt to lead the Conservative Party in nineteen thirty-eight but was unsuccessful. During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, achieving the rank of group captain and was honored as an officer of the Order of the British Empire in nineteen forty-six for his wartime contributions.

After his political endeavors, Massey transitioned into the clergy, serving as a priest at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Point Edward, Ontario, from nineteen sixty to nineteen sixty-three, and later at the Church of the Holy Saviour in Waterloo, Ontario, from nineteen sixty-three to nineteen seventy. His legacy is further enriched by his familial connections, being a cousin to notable figures such as Canadian Governor General Vincent Massey, actor Raymond Massey, philosopher George Grant, and Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff. His son, Walter Massey, followed in the family tradition, becoming an actor.
