Deokjong of Goryeo

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Deokjong of Goryeo

Deokjong of Goryeo, born Wang Hŭm on June ninth, one thousand sixteen, ascended to the throne as the ninth king of the Goryeo dynasty in one thousand thirty-one. He was the son of King Hyeonjong and was confirmed as Crown Prince in one thousand twenty-two, marking the beginning of his journey in leadership.

During his reign, which lasted until October thirty-first, one thousand thirty-four, Deokjong oversaw the completion of the national histories that had been initiated during his father's rule. This significant cultural achievement underscored the importance of historical documentation in Goryeo society.

Under the guidance of General Kang Kam-ch'an, Deokjong also initiated the construction of the second Cheolli Jangseong, a defensive wall that aimed to protect the kingdom's northern frontier. This strategic move was part of his broader efforts to fortify Goryeo against external threats.

In a notable diplomatic effort, Deokjong sought the return of Goryeo prisoners held by the Liao dynasty and requested that they withdraw from the Yalu River. However, when these requests were denied, he focused on strengthening the defenses of his kingdom, demonstrating his commitment to the safety and sovereignty of Goryeo.
