Derick Brassard, a talented Canadian ice hockey centre, was born on September 22, 1987, in Hull, Quebec. Growing up in a hockey-loving community, he began skating at the tender age of five and quickly developed a passion for the sport. His early years were spent playing minor hockey for Gatineau L'Intrépide, where he honed his skills before being selected eighteenth overall by the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2003.
Brassard made an immediate impact in his rookie season with the Voltigeurs during the 2004–05 season, scoring twenty-five goals and accumulating seventy-six points. His impressive performance earned him both the Michel Bergeron Trophy and the RDS Cup. The following year, he doubled his offensive output and was recognized with the Michael Bossy Trophy as the top prospect in the QMJHL. Unfortunately, his final junior season was marred by a shoulder injury that limited his play.
In 2006, Brassard was drafted sixth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL entry draft. He spent the majority of the 2007–08 season with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League, making brief appearances in the NHL. After overcoming injuries in the subsequent seasons, he found his stride in 2010–11, leading to a trade to the New York Rangers in 2013. During his time with the Rangers, he reached the Stanley Cup playoffs four times, including a run to the finals in 2014.
Brassard's career took him through several teams, including the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, New York Islanders, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and Edmonton Oilers. His journey through the NHL made him one of the few players to have played for ten or more teams. In 2022, he returned to the Senators on a professional tryout and secured a one-year contract after a strong training camp. On March 2, 2023, he celebrated a significant milestone by playing in his one thousandth NHL game.
