Desiderius

Desiderius, also known as Daufer or Dauferius, was a prominent figure in the history of northern Italy, reigning as king of the Lombards from the year seven hundred fifty-six until seven hundred seventy-four. His rule marked a significant period for the Lombard kingdom, which was characterized by its cultural and political influence in the region.

Born around the year seven hundred twenty, Desiderius is often remembered for his familial ties to the powerful Frankish king, Charlemagne. This connection was solidified when Charlemagne married Desiderius's daughter, intertwining the fates of their two kingdoms. However, this alliance would ultimately lead to Desiderius's downfall.

In the year seven hundred seventy-four, Charlemagne launched a campaign against Desiderius, culminating in the conquest of the Lombard realm. This event not only marked the end of Desiderius's reign but also signified the decline of Lombard sovereignty in Italy.

Desiderius remains a notable historical figure, recognized as the last Lombard ruler to wield significant regional power. His legacy is intertwined with the rise of Charlemagne and the transformation of the political landscape in medieval Europe.
