Desiré Wilson

Desiré Wilson, born on November 26, 1953, in Brakpan, South Africa, is a trailblazing former racing driver who made her mark in the male-dominated world of Formula One. As one of only five women to compete in the prestigious series, she entered the Formula One World Championship Grand Prix in 1980, driving a non-works RAM Racing-prepared Williams FW07. Unfortunately, she did not qualify for the race, but her determination and talent were evident.

In 1981, Wilson participated in the non-world championship South African Grand Prix with Tyrrell Racing, a race that was not part of the World Championship due to the FISA–FOCA war. She qualified sixteenth and showcased her skills in challenging wet conditions, moving up through the field. However, as the track dried, she faced difficulties and ultimately damaged her car while allowing the race leader to pass.

Wilson's most notable achievement came in 1980 when she became the only woman to win a Formula One race of any kind, triumphing at Brands Hatch in the British Aurora F1 Championship. This remarkable victory earned her a grandstand named in her honor at the iconic circuit, a testament to her groundbreaking contributions to motorsport.

After her foray into Formula One, Wilson continued to pursue her passion for racing across various disciplines, including CART and sports car racing. She made three attempts to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in 1982, 1983, and 1984, although she did not succeed in securing a spot in the race.
