Despina Khatun

Despina Khatun, born in the year fourteen thirty-eight, was a prominent political figure in her time, known for her beauty and strategic marriage alliances. As the daughter of John IV of Trebizond and Bagrationi, a descendant of King Alexander I of Georgia, she was well-positioned within the intricate web of royal connections in the region.

In fourteen fifty-eight, Despina married Uzun Hasan, the ruler of the Aq Qoyunlu, a union that not only solidified political ties but also allowed her to maintain her Orthodox Christian faith, a rare concession in such marriages. This agreement was significant, as it demonstrated the complexities of interfaith relationships during a time of religious tension.

Despina's influence extended beyond her marriage; she was instrumental in fostering Orthodox Christianity in Iran, where she was permitted to build churches and was accompanied by a retinue of priests.
