In nineteen seventy-eight, McKnight became a vital member of the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic collective, a role he maintained until twenty twenty-one, continuing to perform with them on occasion. His unique style and innovative approach to guitar have made him a sought-after musician in the industry.

In addition to his work with these iconic groups, McKnight briefly served as the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers following the tragic death of Hillel Slovak in nineteen eighty-eight. His tenure with the band was short-lived, as he was soon replaced by John Frusciante.
