Dhondo Keshav Karve

Dhondo Keshav Karve, widely revered as Maharshi Karve, was a pioneering social reformer in India, particularly noted for his unwavering commitment to women's welfare. Born on April eighteenth, eighteen fifty-eight, he dedicated his life to advocating for widow remarriage, a cause he personally embodied by remarrying a widow himself. His efforts were instrumental in challenging societal norms and promoting the education of widows, which was a radical notion at the time.

In nineteen sixteen, Karve founded the SNDT Women's University, marking a significant milestone as the first women's university in India. This institution was a testament to his belief in empowering women through education, enabling them to become self-sufficient and independent. His vision extended beyond education; he also established the 'Anath Balikashram,' an orphanage for girls, further demonstrating his commitment to improving the lives of women and children.

Karve's activism was not limited to women's issues; he was also a vocal opponent of the caste system and played a crucial role in founding societies aimed at enhancing primary education in rural areas. His efforts culminated in a conference against the devdasi practice, showcasing his dedication to social reform.

In recognition of his monumental contributions, the Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, in nineteen fifty-eight, coinciding with his one hundredth birthday. The title 'Maharshi,' meaning 'great sage,' reflects the profound respect he garnered from the Indian public for his lifelong dedication to social justice and reform.
