Dianne Holum

Dianne Holum, born on May nineteenth, nineteen fifty-one, is a retired American speed skater and accomplished skating coach. Her journey in the world of speed skating began at a remarkably young age, as she became the youngest competitor in the world speed skating championships in nineteen sixty-six. The following year, she showcased her talent by winning a bronze medal at the World Allround Championships.

At just sixteen years old, Holum made her mark on the Olympic stage during the nineteen sixty-eight Winter Olympics, where she earned a silver medal in the 500 meter race, finishing in a three-way tie for second place. She also secured a bronze medal in the 1000 meter event, further establishing her reputation as a formidable athlete.

Holum's crowning achievement came at the nineteen seventy-two Winter Olympics, where she won a gold medal in the 1500 meter event, setting an Olympic record in the process. After a sixth-place finish in the 1000 meter race, she concluded her Olympic career with a silver medal in the 3000 meters. Remarkably, she retired from competitive skating at the young age of twenty, having already made a significant impact on the sport.

Transitioning to coaching, Holum began mentoring young athletes, including a fourteen-year-old Eric Heiden, who would go on to win five gold medals at the nineteen eighty Winter Olympics. She also coached Eric's sister, Beth Heiden, and made history as the first female coach for a female speed skater at the nineteen seventy-six Olympics. Holum's contributions to the sport were recognized with her induction into the National Speedskating Hall of Fame in nineteen eighty-six and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety-six.

In addition to her coaching legacy, Holum guided her daughter, Kirstin Holum, who became the Junior World Allround Champion in nineteen ninety-seven and participated in the nineteen ninety-eight Winter Olympics.
