Diarmait Mac Murchada, also known as Dermot MacMurrough, was born around the year 1110 and became the King of Leinster in Ireland in 1127. His reign lasted until 1171, a period marked by significant political turmoil and the shifting dynamics of power in Ireland. In 1167, he faced a major setback when he was deposed by Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, the High King of Ireland, which set the stage for a dramatic turn in his fortunes.
In a bid to reclaim his throne, Mac Murchada sought assistance from King Henry II of England. This pivotal decision led him to forge an alliance with Richard de Clare, the 2nd Earl of Pembroke, famously known as
