Dick Rathmann

Dick Rathmann, born on January sixth, nineteen twenty-four, was an American racing driver known for his remarkable career in motorsports. He began his journey in the AAA Championship Car series, making four starts during the nineteen forty-nine and nineteen fifty seasons, including a notable appearance at the Indianapolis 500 in nineteen fifty. His best finish in this series came in Milwaukee, where he secured sixth place in nineteen fifty.

In nineteen fifty-one, Rathmann transitioned to NASCAR, where he quickly established himself as a formidable competitor in the Grand National series, achieving significant success until nineteen fifty-five. His return to the USAC Championship Car series in nineteen fifty-six marked the beginning of a new chapter, as he participated in the series until nineteen sixty-four, accumulating an impressive forty-one starts, including multiple Indianapolis 500 races.

Rathmann's career was not without its challenges. He famously sat on the pole for the nineteen fifty-eight Indianapolis 500, but a tragic accident on the first lap, involving fifteen cars and resulting in the death of fellow driver Pat O'Connor, led to Rathmann becoming the first pole-sitter in Indy history to complete no laps. This unfortunate event has only been replicated twice since then.

As the elder brother of Jim Rathmann, the winner of the nineteen sixty Indianapolis 500, Dick's legacy in racing is intertwined with his brother's. The two famously swapped names in nineteen forty-six to allow Jim to race underage, a decision that would define their public personas for life. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Rathmann was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in two thousand nine.
