Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Dick Turpin

Dick Turpin, born on September twenty-first, seventeen oh five, was an infamous English highwayman whose life of crime became the stuff of legend following his execution in York for horse theft. Initially, he may have followed in his father's footsteps as a butcher, but by the early 1730s, Turpin had veered into a life of crime, joining a gang of deer thieves and later evolving into a poacher, burglar, horse thief, and even a killer.

His most notorious exploits began after the arrest of his gang members in seventeen thirty-five, which forced him into hiding. By seventeen thirty-seven, he resurfaced with new accomplices, one of whom he may have accidentally shot. This violent turn of events led to further bloodshed when he killed a man who attempted to capture him.

Seeking refuge in Yorkshire, Turpin adopted the alias John Palmer. However, his lavish lifestyle raised suspicions among local magistrates, leading to his imprisonment in York Castle on charges of horse theft. His true identity was uncovered through a letter he wrote to his brother-in-law, which fell into the hands of the authorities. On March twenty-second, seventeen thirty-nine, he was convicted on two counts of horse theft and sentenced to death.

Turpin was hanged at Knavesmire on April seventh, seventeen thirty-nine. Following his execution, he became a romanticized figure in English folklore, celebrated as a dashing outlaw in ballads, theatre, and later in film and television throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.
