Didier Défago

Didier Défago, born on October second, nineteen seventy-seven, in Morgins, Valais, is a distinguished Swiss retired alpine ski racer. He made his World Cup debut at the young age of eighteen in March nineteen ninety-six, quickly establishing himself as a formidable competitor on the slopes.

Throughout his career, Défago achieved significant milestones, including being crowned Swiss national champion in downhill in two thousand three and in giant slalom in two thousand four. His most notable triumph came during the twenty ten Winter Olympics held in Whistler, where he clinched the gold medal in downhill, solidifying his status as an Olympic champion.

In the two thousand five World Cup season, he finished sixth overall and fourth in the Super-G, marking it as one of his most successful years. The following year, he made headlines by winning two downhill races consecutively at the prestigious events in Wengen and Kitzbühel, a feat not accomplished since Stephan Eberharter in two thousand two and the first for a Swiss racer since Franz Heinzer in nineteen ninety-two.

However, his career faced challenges when he suffered a knee injury while training on a glacier above Zermatt in mid-September twenty ten, which ultimately led to the end of his two thousand eleven season. After a remarkable career, Défago announced his retirement in March twenty fifteen, concluding with a second-place finish at the World Cup finals in downhill in Méribel, France, followed by his final race in the super-G the next day.
